Sanctioned by others External threat WebInternal control, such as a person's sense of conscience, values, or desire for approval from others, decreases the chance that one will commit deviant behavior. On the other hand, in external control, people conform because there are authority figures that are allowed or accepted to give sanctions if someone departs from the social norms.
